Lose and gain weight at the same time!

Have you heard of food which makes you gain weight and lose weight at the same time?
Sounds perplexing, doesn’t it? We will try to understand together how it works. Let’s take nuts (hazelnuts, cashews, almonds etc), bananas, bee pollen, avocado as examples.
Let’s fist understand how much calories they contain. I used the Program called Fitness Pal and Fat Secret as a reference.
Hazelnuts – 628 calories per 100 gr. There are about 90 calories in 10 pieces. Out of them: fat – 81% fat, carbs – 11%, protein – 8%.

2) Cashews – 553 calories per 100 gr. There are about 85 calories in 10 pieces. Out of which: fat – 66%, carbs – 22%, protein – 12%.

3) Almonds – 576 calories per 100 gr. There are about 69 calories in 10 pcs. Out of which: fat – 73%, carbs – 14%, protein – 13%.

4) Bananas – 89 calories in 100 grams. One medium banana contains 105 calories. Out of which: fat – 3% fat, carbs – 92%, protein – 5%

5) Bee pollen – 16 calories in 1 teaspoon. Out of which: fat -14%, carbs – 55%, protein – 31%.

6) Avocado – 160 calories per 100 grams. One medium avocado contains 322 calories. Out of which: fat – 77%, carbs – 19%, protein – 4% protein.

As we can see hazelnuts, cashews, almonds and avocados are rich in general amount of calories and in fat.

Bananas and bee pollen are rich in carbonates. So potentially they can never be used for weight loss, but it is not as simple as that.

The thing is that any of that products above can replace you one snack during a day at a lower amount of calories than your usual meal.

For example, if you have nuts or bananas or avocado instead of your snacks, it will eventually lead you to the weight loss.

If you add all that on the top of your usual meals of snacks without cutting the portions, it will increase you weight.

Here I want to come back to bee pollen. In my opinion, it is very difficult to use it instead of your snacks, so most probably you will add it to your food (yogurt, milk or smoothie). However, in comparison with other foods it doesn’t contain many calories at all, while providing you with many nutritional elements for your daily menu and fastens your metabolism. So most probably you will not start gaining weight consuming bee-pollen, but you will start losing it instead.

Bee pollen and its health benefits

I continue my investigation about the world’s best superfoods and today I will tell you more about bee pollen.

Bee pollen is one of the best products of beekeeping together with royal jelly and propolis.

Sweet by its taste with subtle honey-floral fragrance, it has a unique composition. Just imagine, it contains all minerals, vitamins, amino acids, flavonoids, proteins and other biologically active elements which are known by mankind for today.

How is the bee pollen collected?

Pollinating flowers, bees collect pollen from plant anthers. They mix it together with a small drop of the secretion produced by their salivary glands and they put it in something called corbiculae (special baskets) located on their hind legs. Then bees carry the pollen to their hive where they pack it in honeycomb cells.

There is the special technology which allows beekeepers to gather the pollen – they install special devices called pollen traps. As bees must force their flight through the traps in order to bring the pollen to the hive, they lose some pollen and it falls to a special tray.

What is the bee pollen useful for?

Physical or emotional exhaustion. Problems with sleep. Bee pollen regulates the blood supply to nervous tissues and it strengthens and calms down the nervous system making it resistant to stress. It also helps to improve the memory and concentration.

Problems with excess weight. People, who choose wrong diets in their hope to lose weight, often forget that they do not receive enough of nutrients, vitamins and microelements, necessary for their organism. Bee pollen helps to reduce weight and prevents from receiving the lack of proteins.

For eye sight health. Bee pollen is rich in carotenes, which are transformed into vitamin A in our organism, and vitamin A plays the crucial role for the healthy eyes. Besides, bee pollen contains essential amino acids which prevent the eye diseases, specially those which appear with age.

Raising the hemoglobin level. Bee pollen is a great remedy for augmenting the hemoglobin level due to its content of iron and vitamin B groups.

Against inflammation. Bee pollen has the ability to rejuvenate a human‘s body in a natural way. It helps the cells of the body to regenerate and it suppresses the microbal, infectious and bacterial activity.

Against cardiovascular diseases. Bee pollen is an excellent means for preventing heart diseases. A large amount of potassium contained in it supports the healthy heart activity and it strengthens the blood vessel walls. It is also famous for its anti-clotting functions.

For nails, skin and hair health. Thanks to its anti-inflammation properties, bee-pollen suppresses the appearance of acne and makes the skin look healthy and smooth. Bee pollen antioxidant properties and zinc content also contribute to the strengthening of the hair roots and shiny hair structure.

Bee pollen hydrates nails and makes them stronger and less fragile.

Against diabetes. Bee pollen is rich in vitamin B1, also called Thiamine, and Vitamin B3 (niacine) which helps to prevent diabetes.

However, if you think of treating diabetes with bee pollen, be very careful and first consult with your doctor.

Apart from all the benefits above, the intake of bee pollen is very beneficial for women’s health as it helps to prepare a woman’s body for pregnancy,

Non less beneficial the bee pollen is for the men’s health as it improves the sexual drive, diminishes the prostate issues and it will augment the effect of the infertility treatment.

How much bee pollen to take daily.

There is no reference dosage for the bee pollen intake.

From what I have found as the first intake it is recommended to consume a small amount to be sure that you are not allergic. Then ¼ of the teaspoon, then ½ and then increase it to 1 teaspoons at a time, but not more than 2 teaspoons per day. Take it 30 minutes before the food intake.

Do not gulp it immediately, wait until the raw granules are dissolved in your mouth.

Avoid taking bee pollen after 6pm as it can have the exciting effect on your organism which will make it more difficult to fall asleep in time.

You can take it with your yogurt or in your smoothie.

You can take it as organic supplements in chewables and in raw granules (that’s what I prefer!).

Health conditions at which it is better to avoid the bee pollen intake:

  1. allergy to any particular pollen type
  2. honey allergy
  3. breast-feeding due to the potential risks of allergy for a baby
  4. obesity or diabetes as the bee pollen contains fructose and glucose and it is considered to be the high calorie food.
